Choose a VR headset by working backward from software, room, fit, and total cost. Hardware rankings change. Those four constraints remain useful long after a new model launches.
If two headsets can run what you want, buy the one you can wear comfortably, return easily, and use without rebuilding your room or computer.
Start with three experiences, not three headsets
Before comparing products, write down three things you want to do in VR. Be specific:
- “Play a particular PS VR2 game,” not “gaming.”
- “Run a PC racing simulator with a wheel,” not “realism.”
- “Do 25-minute fitness sessions,” not “exercise.”
- “Watch films in a private virtual cinema,” not “media.”
- “Use three virtual monitors with my laptop,” not “productivity.”
Now check where those experiences actually run. A headset that cannot run your top choice is eliminated, even if it wins a hardware comparison.
This step also protects you from buying for a fantasy use case. If you have never enjoyed tweaking PC games, a complex PC VR system is unlikely to change your personality.
Decide which ecosystem you are willing to maintain

The official PS VR2 compatibility page notes that original PS VR games are not automatically compatible with PS VR2. This is the kind of ecosystem detail that matters more than a panel specification.
Calculate total cost before comparing value
Use this formula:
headset + required computer/console + tracking + adapters + vision correction + essential software + likely fit fix = real entry cost
Examples of easily missed costs include:
- a PC adapter, DisplayPort cable, or compatible Bluetooth connection;
- base stations and controllers sold separately from a specialist headset;
- a GPU upgrade for the simulation settings you expect;
- prescription lens inserts;
- a head strap only if the included fit does not work for you;
- taxes, shipping, import fees, and a weak return policy.

Treat fit as a specification
Comfort is not visible in a comparison chart. Check these before the return window closes:
Weight distribution
Total grams do not tell you where the load sits. A front-heavy headset can feel less comfortable than a heavier but better-balanced one. Look for adjustment at the top and rear, and check whether the visor stays clear without overtightening.
Lens adjustment and clear viewing area
Confirm the headset can accommodate your interpupillary distance and that both eyes stay in the clearest part of the lenses. Lens design affects how much clarity remains when the headset shifts; raw display resolution does not describe that.
Glasses and prescription support
Check the manufacturer’s frame-clearance guidance. Your glasses must not touch the headset lenses. If you plan to use prescription inserts, confirm that a supplier supports the exact model before buying the headset.
Heat, facial material, and pressure
Wear the headset for the length of a realistic session, not a two-minute demo. Notice forehead, cheek, nose, and rear-head pressure. For fitness, consider how the facial interface handles sweat and whether it is removable.
Fit is personal, which makes a straightforward return policy part of the product—not an afterthought.
Read display specifications in context
Marketing pages often lead with resolution. A useful image-quality check includes:
- display resolution — the number of pixels available;
- lens clarity — how much of the view remains sharp as your eyes move;
- refresh rate and performance — whether the system can render smoothly;
- black levels and contrast — especially noticeable in dark scenes;
- field of view — how much of your vision is filled;
- glare, reflections, and persistence — optical behaviour that a resolution number misses;
- passthrough quality — important for mixed reality and seeing the room.
For example, PlayStation lists PS VR2’s OLED display, per-eye resolution, supported refresh rates, eye tracking, and approximate field of view on its official technical-specifications page. Read the full set rather than repeating only the largest number.
Check tracking and input against the activity
Inside-out camera tracking is convenient because it does not need external base stations. Lighthouse-style external tracking can suit specialized PC VR setups and tracked accessories. Neither is automatically “best.”
Ask:
- Will controllers move behind my back or outside camera view in the software I use?
- Do I need hand tracking, eye tracking, full-body trackers, or a racing wheel?
- Can replacement controllers be purchased separately in my region?
- Does the room have mirrors, direct sunlight, or low light that could interfere?
- Is the headset wired, and can I manage the cable safely?
A seated simulator and an active rhythm game place different demands on the same tracking system.
Verify current software and account rules
Store libraries change. Before buying:
- Open the official store in your region.
- Confirm your three must-have apps list the exact headset or platform.
- Check whether multiplayer needs a subscription.
- Check cross-buy, cross-play, family sharing, mod support, and save portability if they matter.
- Confirm age, account, and supervised-use requirements for the people who will use it.
Do not assume “SteamVR compatible” means every feature works on every headset. Do not assume a game purchased on one store transfers to another.
Choose storage around your behaviour
Storage needs depend on whether you keep a large standalone library installed, record video, or mostly stream from a PC. Buying the largest capacity “just in case” can be poor value; buying too little creates constant uninstalling.
Look at the installed sizes of your real shortlist, reserve room for updates and recordings, and decide how many large apps you want available at once. External PC storage does not automatically expand standalone headset storage.
Use a return-window test plan
Test the decision while you can still reverse it:
- Inspect lenses and displays for defects.
- Update the headset and controllers.
- Set your real play boundary.
- Test the included strap before ordering a replacement.
- Try seated, standing, and mixed-reality modes you expect to use.
- Test glasses clearance or prescription inserts.
- Run your must-have software and any PC or console connection.
- Use it for a realistic session, then check pressure and symptoms.
- Confirm microphone, speakers, controller tracking, charging, and standby drain.
- Decide before the return deadline, not the night after it.
Keep every insert, cable, and protective film until you are sure.
Used and refurbished: inspect the expensive failure points
Used VR can be worthwhile because cosmetic wear is less important than optical, tracking, and battery condition. Check:
- lens scratches, coating damage, and sun-burned display spots;
- dead pixels, mura, or persistent lines on a flat background;
- controller drift, cracked tracking rings, missing straps, and battery corrosion;
- cameras and boundary tracking in a normal room;
- USB, DisplayPort, audio, and charging ports;
- facial-interface cleanliness and replaceability;
- battery runtime and unexpected shutdowns;
- account locks, enterprise management, or missing factory-reset access;
- all proprietary cables, adapters, controllers, and base stations.
Compare the used price with manufacturer-certified refurbished stock that includes a warranty. A small saving is not worth inheriting a damaged lens.
Red flags in headset recommendations
Be cautious when a guide:
- calls one headset best for everyone;
- does not state its region or review date;
- compares list prices while ignoring required accessories;
- describes compatibility without linking to official support;
- recommends a replacement strap before testing the included one;
- repeats manufacturer language without explaining trade-offs;
- hides affiliate relationships or changes the winner based on commission.

If any blank remains, research that blank instead of reading another “top 10” list.
